How To Save On Water Usage in Your Home

Water is a valuable resource that cannot be taken for granted. Droughts are growing more common due to climate change and the more intense weather that comes with them, making water supplies more unpredictable, especially during the summer.

In Ireland, the average household uses roughly 330 litres of water per day or 140 litres per person per day. According to Waterwise, 85% of people have no idea how much water we consume daily. If they had to guess, they usually come up with a figure between 50 and 100 litres per day, which is far less than the actual figure.

If you want to reduce water consumption in your home, we've put up a list of quick and simple ways to do so.

1. Shut off the taps.

Letting your water usage spin out of control is not a great idea. Turning off the running water from your tap while brushing your teeth saves 6 liters of water every minute. Fix faulty taps to save 60 liters of water pouring down the drain each week.

2. Take shorter showers

A long shower can consume up to 17 litres approximately of water every minute. To keep your showers to the minimum amount of time, try setting a timer on your phone.

Switching to a water-saving shower head can allow you to wash with less water, saving your water and money.

3. Save your dirty garments.

Washing a full load of clothing in the washer consumes less water and energy than washing two half-loads. As a result, your bills will be cheaper.

4. Minimize food waste

Producing our cereal, fruit, and other foods necessitates a large amount of water.

Every year, more than half of the 7 million tonnes of food and drink are thrown away by Irish households. You could save up to €540 a year by wasting less food.

5. Gardening at the right time

By watering your outside plants early in the morning or late in the afternoon, you can avoid the water evaporating quickly due to the sun and heat. You should be watering soil so that the water reaches the roots of the plant for maximum absorption.

Animals, too, need water during a heat wave. Rather than pouring continuous water into your garden, put a water-filled container, such as a roasting dish, out for birds to sip and clean themselves with.

6. No more dishwasher

Do you have a dishwasher? You'll use less water than if you did the dishes by hand if you fill it up completely each time you run it. Even if you're using a washing-up bowl, you can do it. What better reason to relax and unwind than this?

7. Have a plumbing emergency plan in place.

Check your kitchen pipes and dishwasher hose for gradual leaks regularly.

Determine the location of your household stop valve and confirm that you can turn it on and off. If you ever have a burst pipe, you'll thank us since you'll be able to stop the flow before it floods your home.
